Sam Lee wins a Spirit of Folk Award at the 2016 Folk Alliance
Congratulations to Sam Lee who has been presented with a Spirit of Folk Award at the 2016 Folk Alliance International conference in Kansas. As well as being a Mercury nominated folk singer and song collector, Sam has been the driving force behind the award-winning folk club The Nest Collective and is the founder of a burgeoning song collectors movement.
Other recipients of the Spirit of Folk Awards include Troy Campbell, Violet Hensley, Dave Siglin, Phyllis Stenson and Tony Turner. The awards are presented to honor and celebrate people and organizations actively involved in the promotion and preservation of folk music through their creative work, their community building, and their demonstrated leadership.
This year, the Folk Alliance International also launched three new folk awards, Album of the Year, Song of the Year and Artist of the Year. The album of the year award was won by Rhiannon Giddens for Tomorrow Is My Turn, song of the year went to The Stray Birds for Best Medicine from the album of the same name and artist of the year went to Darlingside.
