Record Store Day 2016 – Timelines Announced
The timelines for labels and stores to participate in Record Store Day 2016 have recently been announced and details can be found on the Record Store Day website here.
Record Store Day is the one day of the year when over 200 independent record shops all across the UK come together to celebrate their unique culture. Special vinyl releases are made exclusively for the day and many shops and cities host artist performances and events to mark the occasion.
Thousands more shops celebrate the day around the globe in what’s become one of the biggest annual events on the music calendar. The first Record Store Day was officially kicked off by Metallica in San Francisco in 2008 and the annual event is now held every third Saturday in April.
So the key dates for your diary are as follows:
- 29th January: Retail sign up closes
- 3rd February: List of RSD participating shops sent to signed up labels
- 26th February: Label sign up closes
- Early/ Mid-March: Release list announcement (TBC)
- 16th April: Record Store Day is the third Saturday in April
On RSD itself, it’s anticipated that over 25,000 music fans all over the UK will be interacting with music buying and discovery. Amplifying this excitement are the amount of artists who make special appearances and surprise performances around the country on this day.
They’ll also be an annual launch event which takes place early March to mark the announcement of the RSD release list. Attended by shops, fans, press and industry figures it’s always a great evening to kick off the RSD countdown.
Similarly to the website, the RSD social media channels now have a huge reach to a very engaged record buying audience with a total of over 70k followers. Those releasing RSD material should ensure any social media is targeted at the following UK pages.
