The English Duchamp on sparkling form
Backed by REM’s Peter Buck and The Minus 5’s Scott McCaughey and Bill Rieflin, this is a jangling departure from 2004’s more folksy Spooked. Endlessly inventive and ripe with imagery, Hitchcock’s Dada dreamscape sounds like the work of a latterday Edward Lear, not least on "Red Locust Frenzy" and "Adventure Rocket Ship".
And whilst still owing much to Dylan and Barrett – the lysergic "Underground Sun" is very Syd – there are moments of understated loveliness here too. Best of the batch is "N.Y. Doll", a tender requiem for Arthur Kane, aided by Ian McLagan on keyboards. A wonderful record that ranks amongst his very best - ROB HUGHES, UNCUT. |
