On a very positive note for jazz and following on from the BBC Jazz Awards on July 13th, just over 11 per cent of the entries for this year’s Nationwide Mercury Prize were for jazz albums, proportionally much larger than the genre’s market share.
However, the initial nominations "do not include the ever increasing number of crossover albums, for example jazz-rock and jazz-soul, that are now being entered for the prize,” says Kevin Milburn of the Mercury Prize. Nominations will be announced on 18 July. Last year Polar Bear was the only jazz group nominated. The winner will be announced at a special show in September. |
