 Karine Polwart is set to release her third album Fairest Floo’er. This marks not only a return to music after time off to have her first child, but also a return to the traditional music of Scotland with which she began her career a decade ago as well as being the first release on her own Hegri label.
Originally intended to be an album comprised of original and traditional material, she recorded so many songs of both styles that two separate albums seemed the only sensible option. This first release is timed to coincide with an autumn tour with her loyal army of fans in mind. Specially priced, further discounts will be available to all those attending the shows. Mixing tragic ballads and beautiful love songs, sparse piano and guitar arrangements weave around her warm vocals and assured storytelling. She demonstrates a real affinity with the carefully chosen tracks: “I’ve spent most of my time on maternity leave this year growing a gorgeous wee baby boy… It’s been a very quiet, introverted and contemplative period for me, and the rawness and simplicity of the songs reflects that.”
The experience of becoming a mother invests much of the material with a completely new level of depth and insight. A prime example is Wife of Usher’s Well, about a woman tormented by the ghosts of her dead child. “Those songs in particular are much closer to the bone now that I have a wee one of my own. It’s much easier to imagine myself inside the skin of the women in such beautiful, tragic stories.”
The new album of original songs is due to follow in March 2008.
