Featured Label: Far Out Recordings

Far Out Recordings was founded in 1994 by London DJ and record producer Joe Davis. His passion for Brazilian music took him to Brazil where his enthusiasm for record-collecting led him to some of his musical heroes and thus, friendships were cemented, the vibes recorded and the label was born.

At Far Out Recordings, the mission is to bring the sound of Brazil to the world – to showcase the history and culture of a land bursting with creativity and energy – from the classical to cutting edge, Far Out Recordings is the sound of quality Brazilian music. The label release recordings from both new and established Brazilian artists such as Azymuth, Joyce, Marcos Valle, Arthur Verocai, The Ipanemas, Sabrina Malheiros, Clara Moreno and Binario, to name a few.

Far Out has also reissued forgotten masterpieces from Milton Nascimento & Roberto Quartins’ catalogue of gems and created successful cutting edge compilations such as Brazilika’, which has previously been compiled by Kenny Dope, 4Hero and Andy Votel.

Far Out also releases music from European and US musicians and producers who share the label’s appreciation of the Brazilian vibes such as Gilles Peterson (BBC Radio 1), Nicola Conte (Blue Note), Zeep, Troubleman (Mark Pritchard) and Marc Mac (4hero) & many others, over the years.

The next release from Far Out is Joyce Moreno’s ‘Raiz’ (out 12 January) which marks fifty years of Joyce’s imperative involvement in Brazil’s rich musical heritage: paying tribute to some of the beautiful Brazilian standards she was listening to around the time she first stepped foot in a recording studio.

2014 has seen Far Out Recordings celebrating its 20th anniversary with an impressive back catalogue of CD, LP and Digital releases now stretching over the 200 mark. The name Far Out is almost a by word for quality new Brazilian music – you won’t find a Brazilian music compilation worth its salt without at least one track from the label on it and to date we have licensed tracks to over three hundred compilations while our music has been synched on numerous TV shows, films and adverts including CSI Miami, Nike adverts and Clarkes.

“After sixteen years of Far Out, we are only just beginning to realise our ambitions” surmises Joe. “We are still learning about production, recording and music, always and we are fortunate to be surrounded by the most exciting group of musicians and producers who are making brilliant music. We are still intent on finding new stars, but we are immensely proud of what we have achieved so far and our formidable artist roster.”
